Joey Albanese, LMT SEP (he/him)
I’m just another human on an ongoing journey of discovering what it means to be in a body. Growing up as a sensitive queer boy, I didn’t feel like I could trust what my body was saying. So, I became a chronic people pleaser and developed compulsive behaviors to repress my emotions.
I discovered body-oriented therapies as an adult, which became a helpful tool in reconnecting with myself. In 2014, I took a massage course while working with plant medicines in South America. From there, I continued to study massage therapy, qi gong, energy work, and evolutionary astrology.
After years as a massage therapist, I began to understand how my pain patterns were actually from nervous system dysregulation and self-protective defense mechanisms (shallow breathing, slouched shoulders, muscular bracing). This realization led me to study and now practice trauma healing with Somatic Experiencing.
I’m a geek about all bodies - human bodies, plant bodies, animal bodies, planetary bodies - and the relationship between them all. By seeing ourselves in the world around us, I think we can ground deeper into the wild experience of being alive. When I’m not in my studio, I’m likely getting my hands dirty in the kitchen, out in the garden, or somewhere in the woods.
